Floor Exercise Pommel Horse Rings Vault Parallel Bars Horizontal Bar

This is the Flop FAQ.

This list has been compiled from questions that gymnasts and coaches have asked me about flops over the past two years.
If you have any others, or any corrections to the answers I've given please e-mail me.

  •  What is a flop?

A Flop is one of the following 3 skills:
  1. Circle in cross support on 1 pommel (Pommel Loop)
A Pommel Loop begins in cross support forward on one pommel and circles around to cross support forward on the same
      pommel.
Or...starts in side support forward on one pommel (or on the end with one hand on the pommel 1-2) and is a ¾ circle with a ¼
turn to cross support backward, followed by ½ circle to cross support forward on the same pommel.
Or...starts from cross support forward on one pommel and is a ½ circle to cross support backward then a ¾ circle with ¼
turn to side support forward on the same pommel.
  2. Direct Stöckli A (DSA)
A DSA starts in side support forward and has a ¾ circle to cross support backward and a ¾ circle to side support forward.
  3. Direct Stöckli B (DSB)
A DSB starts in side support forward and has a ¾ circle to cross support backward and a ¾ circle to cross support forward.
Exception: A cross support travel (forward or backward) to the pommel finishing with a ¼ turn to side or cross support is also a
  Stöckli.

  •  Can I combine flops, if so how many?

Absolutely. You can do 1 flop sequence consisting of 3 or 4 flops during a Pommel Horse routine.
When combining flops remember the following rules:
  •  A single flop has 3 hand placements, two flops have 5, three flops have 7 and four flops have 9.
  •  A Pommel Loop can not be done between 2 Stöcklis.
  •  In order to do 2 Pommel Loops between 2 Stöcklis each Pommel Loop must have a ¼ turn.

  •  How many different flop sequences are there?

There are 8 combinations of a 3 flop sequence, and 9 combinations of a 4 flop sequence.
Below are all the different flop sequences that can be performed.

  •  Can I combine flops with Russian wendeswings?

Yes you can. You can do 1 flop to a Russian or 2 flops to a Russian.

  •  Can I connect other skills to a flop or flop/Russian sequence?

Yes. Whatever skill you connect to the flop or flop/Russian sequence needs to be worth at least a D in order to receive connection
  bonus.
  •  Any travel that finishes in side support can be connected to a flop or flop/Russian sequence if there is no more than a ½ circle
between the two skills (e.g. Moguilny or Belenki).
  •  A flop sequence can be done during a Magyar (DSB - DSB - Loop ¼) or Sivado travel (Loop - Loop ¼ - DSB).
  •  A flop sequence or a flop/Russian sequence can connect to a Russian wendeswing on the end if there is no rear support
  between them.

  •  Does the USA Gymnastics Men's Program have different rules regarding Flops?

Yes, USAG flop rules are different.
  •  USAG does not recognize a Maygar or Sivado travel as a D when it has a flop sequence during the travel. The flop sequence breaks the connection so, each skill (the travel to the flop sequence, the flop sequence, and the travel after the flop sequence) receives its own value.
  •  The following flop sequences are worth a Developmental D (0.1 in Bonus) in USAG: Pommel Loop + Pommel Loop ¼ turn, Pommel Loop + DSA, Pommel Loop + DSB, DSB + DSB, DSB + DSA, and DSB + Pommel Loop ¼.
